Erie Township

Local Board of Appeals & Equalization Meeting

April 14, 2026

Meeting was called to order at 9:00 a.m.

Present: Wes Hegna, Township Assessor; Lee Brekke, County Assessor; Residents Jennifer Kranzler; Craig Kleindl; Katherine Taylor; Teaira Christen; Joan Lee; and Terry Mackner; Supervisors Kyle Vareberg and Mike Hough; and Clerk Becky Renner.

Mr. Brekke explained the process of grading homes in regards to the market value and how it works. Minnesota has a system that they have to follow and they don’t make the rules/regulations. The county is given their information from Mr. Hegna, who does our township’s assessing.

Mr. Hegna explained that when he is unable to go into a home to see its condition, he has to make an estimate of the condition. With that said, Ms. Kranzler, Mr. Keindl and Ms. Taylor will be meeting with Mr. Hegna at their residences in the near future to have their residences reassessed. After this is completed, they will be sent a new assessment, which they will be able to contest at the County Assessment meeting on June 15, 2026. A motion was made by Kyle Vareberg, seconded by Mike Hough and carried, without a dissenting vote, to leave these assessments unchanged.

Wes Hegna spoke with Jeffrey Davis prior to the meeting and agreed to lower his property value by $49,400 due to the removal of a garden shed. Motion was made Supervisor Vareberg, seconded by Supervisor Hough and carried, without a dissenting vote to accept this lowered value.

Wes Hegna spoke with Mark Taggart prior the meeting and agreed to decrease the value his property from $81,200 to $43,800 due to the removal of a mobile home. Motion was made Supervisor Vareberg, seconded by Supervisor Hough and carried, without a dissenting vote to accept this lowered value.

Wes Hegna spoke with Mark Heit prior the meeting and agreed to decrease the value his property from $1,472,700 to $1,424,400 due to the misunderstanding of the finished basement size. Motion was made Supervisor Vareberg, seconded by Supervisor Hough and carried, without a dissenting vote to accept this lowered value.

A motion was made by Supervisor Vareberg, seconded by Supervisor Hough and carried, without a dissenting vote to adjourn the meeting. Meeting was at 11:15 a.m.

Respectfully Submitted,
